What to wear this spring
Five outfit formulas that will make you want to get out.
Hello hello!
Firstly, welcome to our new subscribers this week, brought to us by the wonderful gang at Polyester Zine 🫶
To celebrate the official beginning of spring and hopefully usher in some lovely weather, this week we’re dropping the Capsule Spring Style Guide. I always find that I feel like I have nothing to wear at the turn of a new season, when actually it just requires a little bit of consideration. I hope you find something you like!
As ever, scroll for the news you missed this week, a great Hot & Not from Rahel Stephanie (aka @eatwithsp00ns), and some great recommendations for the weekend ahead.
Enjoy the break!!!
Holly x

We’ve had a couple of spring false starts but it’s literally April now and if time continues to go as quickly as it has this year, the best weather is right around the corner. It’s time to wear a couple of layers for fun and not just for survival and warmth. It’s time to have fun.
To help us with that transition, I’m here with five outfit formulas to try over the next few weeks. I hope they prompt you to think about things you already own in a new light! Making this obviously made me want to treat myself…🥲
Jorts with layered tops
The spring maths here is really simple: more layers on top means you can freely show some leg and not be too cold. It obviously goes without saying that you can layer your own tops, but, having tried this a few times, I’m quite compelled by the pre-layered sets that take away some of the bulk where you need it least (the armpits). If you like this look, I think a layered top is worth it.

Knee-length skirt
I’m calling this a knee-length skirt and not a midi because some midis are longer than the style we’re going for. That being said, a lot of brands call this length a midi and that’s okay too, just beware when you are looking. My friend recently posed two questions: Why is no one wearing skirts anymore? And, how would I even wear a skirt these days? I took her comments seriously and I think the solution is in this length, either in a utility style or a pleated one. Keep the top half super casual to counteract the femininity, and throw on whichever shoes are your go-to: trainers, loafers, or boots. Long live the skirt!

Skirt over pants aka SKANTS
I was shocked to find the word “skants” genuinely being used out in the world but it is and I’m happy to share it with you. The skort walked so skants could run. Again, this is a layering style that could make yourself, but having done that, I also see the appeal in these silkier, purpose-made versions for the same reasons as before. They flow more elegantly, they are less bulky for the warmer weather, and they are, of course, very fun. The difficulty here is size and fit — you kind of need to go for a brand whose sizing works on you. When they fit well, they are great. Don’t be afraid to layer even further with a pocket belt!

Sporty shorts
My ride or die in the summer. And over the past few years, so many new colours and variants have entered the market, meaning you can avoid sports logos if you prefer it that way.

Fleeting layers
When I tied an old scarf around my waist last year, I felt so Fashion and it didn’t cost me a penny. I also think it would be so fun and easy to make your own fleeting layer if you like this look — what could be more fun than choosing some material and simply adding some ties? Please show me if you do this!

This week, Rahel Stephanie popped into Capsule to share what’s 🔥hot🔥 and what’s not 🙅♀️ …
Rahel is a London-based Indonesian chef, writer, and cultural curator, and the founder of Spoons — a platform that began as a supper club and has grown into a wider practice spanning dining experiences, publishing, and storytelling. Upcoming projects include Cantik Manis, a zine centred on Indonesian desserts and ideas of sweetness, softness, and memory (7 May), alongside a series of pop-ups in London, including Ancestrel Wines (19 April) and Quality Wines (31 May).
🔥🔥🔥Hot🔥🔥🔥
Long-distance crushes, going to the cinema alone, Dostoyevsky, obsession, Sims 2: The Urbz, blow-dries, beautiful women, making fun of your friends (i.e. me), calling your mom regularly, [evolved] Geminis, any opportunity to be in a bikini, romanticising skylines, biceps, being the hottest one in big Tesco, Playboi Carti piano covers
Hot Not… 🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️
Romanticising working-class nostalgia, sauna as a community space/rave, small plates, nonchalance, Ozempic, hyperconceptualisation, asking people to dinner to end a conversation when I don’t really want to, 6 minute voice notes when you are not my bestie, reformer pilates, sounding like Beyoncé at karaoke, not sharing food
📺 Watching: Emma Chamberlain’s updated house tour, relatedly, this video on whether your home is making you happy, and dozens of videos from the Hayley Williams tour that just kicked off (here, here, and here).
📖 Reading: This new Lena Dunham essay on how she became a filmmaker, ahead of her new book release, and Emma Garland’s piece on the Louis Theroux manosphere documentary (TLDR: what if the platforms are the problem?). Also very much reading the new Lauren Conrad profile, in which she talks about walking away from fame after Laguna Beach and The Hills.
🎧 Listening to: Jean, the lovely new Yebba album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, the new Slayyyter album, ‘Feel Your Pain’, the new Eli song, and ‘Younger You’, the new Miley Cyrus song for the Hannah Montana anniversary.
